Deepfakes are the fake videos or audio recordings that look and sound just like the real thing. They use artificial intelligence (AI) to manipulate the appearances and voices of people to simulate real-looking footage (source: csoonline).

How dangerous are deepfakes?

Deepfakes are dangerous because, for one, anybody could create them to promote their chosen agenda as they do not require the special skill that creating authentic videos would. People will eventually take such videos at face value. For another, deepfakes are bad because people will stop trusting any video content at all.

While the technology is good for entertainment, it can obviously be abused for nefarious purposes. It creates fake news phobias. The rise of deepfakes could thus open up a new front in the disinformation war.

Do Good would like to encourage followers to be more cautious and wise in spreading news through the shared media. Someone’s life may be destroyed because of a faked video. Let’s be kind to each other.
